Clergy Identity
For the past decade the Barna Group has been tracking the percentage of Protestant pastors who identify their church as "Calvinist or Reformed" (Nov 15, 2010). Currently, about three out of every 10 Protestant leaders say this phrase accurately describes their church (31%). This proportion is statistically unchanged from a decade ago (32%). In fact, an examination of a series of studies among active clergy during the past decade indicates that the proportion that embraces the Reformed label has remained flat over the last 10 years.

There has been less consistency related to this label during the past decade, with the tracking figures ranging from a low of 26% to a high of 37%.

The Work Teens Aspire to Do
The vast majority of young people have firm ideas about their professional futures. Of course, teenagers¡¯ career goals often change as they mature, develop new interests, or discover other avenues to pursue. Still, the study shows that most young people rarely lack ideas of what they would like to do, even at a relatively early age (June 14, 2011).

Approaches to make church members accountable
Among the 5% of Christian adults who said their church holds them accountable, there were seven primary approaches to oversight that were described. The most common approach was through small groups, which was listed by one-third (34%) of those who claimed to be held accountable. Putting those figures in context, the survey found that 22% of adults were involved in a small group, which means that only 7% of all small group attenders identified accountability as one of the functions fulfilled by their group.

Is the Gospel Worth $6,090,032?
º¹À½ÀÌ 6¸¸ºÒÀÇ °¡Ä¡°¡ ÀÖ´Ù?
Is it possible to determine the economic benefit a church brings to its local community? A recent First Things article reports that researchers led by a University of Pennsylvania professor attempted to make just such an assessment (First Things: April 2011, p. 67). They estimated the economic impact of 12 congregations in the greater Philadelphia area. Some financial benefits could be calculated in a straight-forward fashion: salaries for staff and workers, monies paid for facilities construction and repair, and revenue generated by events such as weddings, funerals and concerts.
±³È¸°¡ Áö¿ª»çȸ¿¡ °¡Á®¿Â °æÁ¦Àû ÀÌÀÍÀ» ÃøÁ¤ÇÑ´Ù´Â °ÍÀº °¡´ÉÇÑ ÀÏÀΰ¡? ÃÖ±ÙÀÇ "First Things"À̶õ ±Û¿¡ ÀÇÇϸé, Ææ½Çº£´Ï¾ÆÀÇ ´ëÇб³¼ö¿¡ ÁöµµÇÏ¿¡ ¿¬±¸¿øµéÀº ±×°Í¿¡ ´ëÇÑ Á¶»ç¸¦ ÇÏ¿´´Ù. The researchers also evaluated the "halo effect" of a congregation, and here is where things really get interesting. By "halo effect," the article is referring to the less tangible goods that nonetheless have real financial benefits. For example, they determined that a "divorce diverted by counseling is worth $18,000; a suicide prevented by counseling is worth $19,000." How they arrived at such figures is not given. Using such a calculus the study ascertained that First Baptist Church in Center City, Philadelphia alone provided a benefit of $6,090,032. Other churches and congregations supplied even more. At the final tally, the 12 congregations were determined to provide an economic benefit of $50, 577,098.

Television doesn't accurately portray American families, according to a study funded by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries. The report indicates that while television portrays all single mothers as middle class or wealthy, the truth is that 69 percent of families headed by women live in poverty. While 80 percent of television's black children live in the middle class or above, the truth is that 50 percent of the nation's black children live in poverty.
